“Eric got this gleam in his eye”

One night in Silicon Valley, we were walking home after getting In-N-Out, and we passed a manmade pond in a small park.  Right along the water’s edge, on the concrete lip you might see at a swimming pool, slept a row of ducks, maybe a dozen.  Eric got this gleam in his eye and whispered, how close do you think we can get before they wake up?  Quietly he moved away from the water and around a small hill and back towards the water, so we were on opposite sides of the row of ducks.  We sat down on the sidewalk adjacent to the concrete lip, and ever so slowly we scooted ourselves towards the ducks.  We spent about twenty minutes this way, in total silence, edging ever closer, inch by inch; and every time one of the ducks stirred, we’d freeze and stare at each other. After what seemed like hours, Mud “won” by getting right behind them–at which point he stood up and yelled, laughing as the ducks scattered.
